Wrong-way bicyclist killed on Highway 84 in Newark

NEWARK An unhoused man riding a bicycle the wrong way on Highway suffered fatal injuries Sunday when he was struck by a van that was trying to avoid crashing into another wagon the California Highway Patrol disclosed The name of the man killed was not without delay issued pending notification of his family Executives noted he was a -year-old Newark transient The fatal collision happened about p m Sunday on eastbound Highway just went of Interstate The CHP commented the man killed was riding a bicycle westbound in the center median against eastbound traffic CHP Officer Nicole Mendibil commented investigators have not determined why he was riding in the wrong direction Eastbound traffic came to a stop also for an unknown reason an eastbound conveyance trying to avoid crashing into another van veered into the divider and struck the man on the bicycle head-on the CHP announced The bicyclist was taken to a hospital where he later died The man driving the Mercedes sedan that struck the bicyclist remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision the CHP revealed
